In most cases, the gastric sleeve surgery procedure can be completed in 60 to 90 minutes. The length of time a gastric sleeve procedure takes will depend on how the surgery is performed.
Gastric sleeve surgery, also called vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) surgery, is generally quicker than a mini gastric bypass or full gastric bypass. Since the surgery takes a short time to complete, risks are reduced, and there is a lower risk of complications.
Anesthesia for Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Thanks to scientific advancements, surgery, and anesthesia are now less risky than ever. A VSG requires a general anesthetic, which induces a managed state of unconsciousness. When you have gastric sleeve surgery, the anesthetic will begin acting within one or two minutes. General anesthetic is extremely safe and, at Be Slim Bariatrics (BSB), will always be administered by a fully qualified anesthetist.
How Long Will Gastric Sleeve Surgery Take?
The gastric sleeve procedure is considered a relatively quick procedure and typically takes less than 60 to 90 minutes to perform. It is normally a laparoscopic surgery, also called keyhole surgery, a minimally invasive technique only requiring tiny incisions in the upper belly. Patients will remain in hospital for one to two nights following gastric sleeve surgery.
Approximately 80% of the stomach is separated using staples or sutures during a sleeve gastrectomy, leaving behind a smaller tube-shaped stomach. When your surgery is complete, you will be cared for in a recovery area where you will be observed until you are fully awake and comfortable in your surroundings. Due to the short operating time required for a gastric sleeve, most people recover from the effects of a general anesthetic within a couple of hours. You will normally be up and about within a few hours of the procedure.
Following a comprehensive assessment and several tests to ensure everything has gone well, you will be discharged within one to two nights with your bariatric surgeon’s approval.
